15th Anniversary Azerbaijan International
“Telecommunication and Information Technologies”
Exhibition and Conference BakuTel 2009!

This year, BakuTel, the Azerbaijan International Telecommunications & Information Technologies Exhibition & Conference, marks its anniversary. For 15 years, the exhibition has been a traditional meeting place for industry professionals. Over 800 companies from 26 countries have, at various times, participated in the exhibition.

BakuTel has always been of great interest to government and international structures. The importance and prestige of the exhibition is demonstrated by the the fact that for four years BakuTel has been supported by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

Greetings were sent to the exhibitors and visitors by Mr. Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, the world’s largest software company; and Dr. Lotfi Zadeh, the outstanding mathematician, founder of the theory of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic, professor at the University of California (Berkeley) and Director of the Berkeley Soft Computing Initiative. Their congratulatory video message was broadcast during the opening ceremony of the exhibition. Last year, Dr. Lotfi Zadeh personally attended the opening ceremony of BakuTel.

Gaining official support from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and the special attendance at the opening of BakuTel of Mr. Hamadoun Touré, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, was a significant event for the exhibition.

Another guest of honour of the exhibition, Mr. Sarbuland Khan, Executive Coordinator of the Global Alliance for ICT and Development, United National Department of Economic and Social Affairs, said at the BakuTel 2008 conference: “I was pleasantly surprised by the ICT development in Azerbaijan. In such a short period, there has been effective, positive progress in this area. The rapid development of ICT in Azerbaijan should serve as an example to other countries.”

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan, which has supported BakuTel for many years, has played a special role in the development and establishment of the exhibition.

The organisations supporting the exhibition include: ITU – International Telecommunication Union, GAID - Global Alliance for ICT and Development, UN – United Nations, RCC – Regional Commonwealth in the field of Communications, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Azerbaijan and National Confederation of The Entrepreneurs (Employers) Organizations of Azerbaijan Republic (AEC). BakuTel has gained international recognition from the UFI (The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry). The status of “UFI Approved Event” is confirmation that the event meets the highest international standards.

For 15 years, BakuTel has attracted major companies to Azerbaijan. Over the years, the exhibitors have included: Ericsson, Nokia-Siemens Networks, Iskratel, Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei, Hewlett Packard, Gilat, Microsoft, Avirtel, Measat, Orbital and many others. There are many examples of successful participation in the BakuTel exhibition. Companies such as Advantek, Exide, Gilat, Hawker, Huawei, Karel, Telesis, and many others began their activities in Azerbaijan by establishing contacts at the exhibition. Today, they are already active through representatives or partner networks. Presentations at the exhibition of the latest services or products, which have found wide use amongst users, have proven to be successful. An example of this is the company AzEuroTel, which first presented IP-telephony at BakuTel 2002, or Catel, which presented CDMA communication at the exhibition in 2003. The “intelligent ATM” of Penki Kontinentai Group enjoyed great success amongst business visitors. Having signed lucrative contracts at the exhibition, the company announced its decision to open an office in Baku. For the first time in Azerbaijan, at BakuTel 2008, mobile operators demonstrated the 3G function, which will soon be available in Azerbaijan. In the same year, Microsoft demonstrated its Azeri language version of Windows XP.

In 2005, the exhibition included a video conference with seven regions of Azerbaijan: Sumgait, Sheki, Mingechevir, Goranboy, Lankaran, Guba and Nakhichevan. Monitors and cameras were installed in these cities, allowing the ICT achievements of these regions to be demonstrated.

The exhibition is a connecting bridge between consumers and manufacturers, as well as an excellent opportunity to study the industry. In addition, BakuTel is the best platform to showcase new products in the industry.

In recent years, the rapid development of the ICT sector in Azerbaijan has had an appreciable effect on the development of the economy in general and, in turn, a significant influence on the formation of an information society in Azerbaijan. Today, the ICT sector, in terms of the pace of development, is second only to the energy sphere in the national economy of Azerbaijan. In the last few years, the annual revenue growth of this sector has reached 30-35%. This trend is expected to continue, which means that, in a few years, the profit level of the ICT sector will reach that of the energy sphere. In the context of globalisation, the integration of Azerbaijan into the world community, by hosting international IT exhibitions, is necessary. Such events allow the international community to become better acquainted with the private companies and government organisations that represent the country’s IT market. The exhibition is one of the key indicators of industry development. The growth of the exhibition directly reflects the rate of ICT development in the country. Each specialised exhibition is a meeting place for the whole industry and a catalyst for contacts and further cooperation. BakuTel presents new ideas and knowledge, both for industry professionals and the younger generation. The exhibition opens its doors to anyone interested in seeing the latest ICT technologies.

On 4 November 2008, a decree was issued by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan to establish a national aerospace industry and to launch telecommunication satellites into orbit. As a result of this, a new era for the exhibition has begun, with huge attention being devoted to this area, and a greater display of satellite communications and technologies. For example, at this year’s exhibition, an approved national satellite project, the launch of which is planned for December 2011, will be presented. Of particular interest are the products and services of new exhibitors. IT Solutions offers design and construction of corporate networks, automation of bank activities, installation of access control systems, and perimeter security and video surveillance. IT Solutions operates in the Azerbaijani market and provides its clients with leading global brands and a professional service. Last year, the company participated in the CIPS exhibition, but as the main focus of the company is design, supply and installation of ICT solutions and systems integration, this year the company is presenting a new stand displaying IT solutions.

For the first time at the exhibition, the following products will be present: the LanDocs Electronic Document Management System, the industry solutions MS Dynamics CRM, and AX and NAV, new solutions in telephony. Caspian NavTel will introduce visitors to safe vehicle and portable navigation equipment, including a competitively priced, high- quality satellite surveillance system, which combines several functions.

Traditionally, the exhibition includes an active business programme of seminars, round tables and online forums.

The 2nd Caspian International Security, Safety and Rescue Exhibition CIPS

BakuTel will be held in one venue with CIPS 2009, the 2nd Caspian International Protection, Security & Rescue Exhibition. The exhibitions are being held together because ICT technologies are widely used in ensuring public safety, and the content of the exhibitions will, therefore, be of interest to specialists in both sectors.

Companies from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Japan, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus have already confirmed their participation in the events. Brands such as Panasonic, LG and Forteza will be presented at the show. CIPS 2009 will not only demonstrate achievements in the development of rescue equipment, fire safety and computer security, but will also act as a centre for exchanging information, forming ideas and seeking opportunities to join efforts to combat the various threats to life and production. Visitors and exhibitors will be able to learn about special vehicles, industrial espionage prevention systems, communication and alarm systems, and burglar alarms. CCTV systems will be widely exhibited this year.

Despite the fact that the exhibition is very young and is being held for only the second time, there is much interest in it and many industry specialists are expected to attend.
