Azerbaijan defines technical parameters of second satellite
Azerbaijan’s state-run company Azercosmos, which operates under the Communications and High Technologies Ministry, is defining the technical parameters of the country’s second telecom satellite, Azerspace-2.
A source in the Azerbaijani telecom market told Trend that Azerspace-2, for its technical parameters won’t be radically different from its predecessor - Azerspace-1.
The payload of Azerspace-1, built on the STAR-2 platform, consists of 36 transponders (24 C band and 12 Ku band transponders). The frequency band of each transponder is 36 MHz.
“The telecommunication satellites may differ from each other by technical parameters,” the source said. “Different frequency ranges can be used in their construction.”
“Aside from the bands used in the construction of the first satellite, there are also X band and Ka band,” the interviewee noted, adding it is possible that new frequency ranges will be used in the construction of the second satellite.
The X band is used for terrestrial and satellite radio.
In the satellite communication, the X band’s part between 7.9 and 8.4 GHz (Satellite-to-Earth) and the part between 7.25 and 7.75 GHz (Earth-satellite) are reserved for fixed satellite communications for military purposes.
The Ka band is mainly used for satellite radio communication and radiolocation. At present, the Ka band is used for rendering the broadband Internet and multimedia services.
“Once the technical parameters and geographical coverage of the satellite are defined, a tender will be announced,” said the source.
According to the source, the primary objective is that the second satellite will be a reserve satellite and designed to provide reliable communication in case of unforeseen circumstances.
The second satellite of Azerbaijan, Azerspace-2, is scheduled to be launched into orbit in 2017. It will also be used to provide telecommunications services.
Azerbaijan’s second satellite program will also have a commercial character.
It is expected that the tender for the construction of the Azerspace-2 will be announced imanufacturers.
